In 1903, Van Meter, Iowa, was terrorized by a winged cryptid dubbed the Van Meter Visitor. Witnesses described an 8-foot, bat-winged creature with a horn emitting blinding light. Unaffected by bullets, the monster and a smaller companion retreated into an abandoned coal mine, which locals then barricaded. Today, this mysterious legend is commemorated locally with an annual festival.
